5 Ways to Maintain a Long Distance Relationship
I never expected that I would fall for someone who lived far away from me! While I still wanted to pursue some of my dreams and career interests, I did not want to end our awesome relationship due to bad timing in life or thinking that it was not meant to be. Plus, some friends who were in similar situations had told me that even though the distance was hard, it will help you and your partner to COMMUNICATE A WHOLE LOT BETTER. Over time, I have learned this to be true since the time away has not only helped us to understand ourselves more, but to build a strong, trusting relationship.
Some ways that I keep my long distance relationship going are:
1. SKYPE DATES
Scheduling a date when you all will have a skype date will give you both something to look forward to! Plus, scheduling a time the two of you can devote to each other is important to keep the bond strong. Then, you will have no interruptions for deep conversations, sharing secrets, and some pillow talk which may even lead to some fun that can keep the romance going while away! Need I say more??..
2. SURPRISE VISITS
This is my favorite part because a surprise trip to see them creates so many fun emotions and unexpected adventures to happen! I actually surprised my boyfriend by coming to Panama from China so I could see him for the holidays! I said there was a surprise at the airport that I sent from China. Well, when he saw me coming down the escalator, he was shocked with his jaw open and starring in disbelief that I was his surprise and came all the way from China to come see him! You love this person that much so, why not?
3. TEXT, CALL, CHAT, SEXT, ETCCCCC..... EVERYDAY
We have made a ritual to say good morning, good night, and never to end a text without saying, "I LOVE YOU!" Due to the distance, try not to start or end your conversations with a silent treatment and anger. It is much harder to continue trust and confidence in a fight when you cannot talk or see the person to really get to the bottom of the situation. Which leads me to the next important way (#4) to keep your long distance relationship going!
4. BE OPEN, ABOUT YOU & YOUR FEELINGS
Talk about your insecurities, emotions, details about details about your day. You want to keep each other in the loop as if they were there with you to prevent any one of you from being left out of the other person's life! This really helps you all to build and solidify your trust in each other because you are sharing everything about you and how you feel. I can say, I have learned quite a few deep secrets from my partner because we have challenged ourselves to be more open so that we keep a strong connection.
5. REMINISCE
Talking about moments together and of course keeping pictures around you of those special times together will help you all to remain connected! Sometimes it is great to talk about great moments and remember what makes your relationship so special, even when you are apart! We still talk about the times when I fell out of the bed when Javier pulled a fake rat in the bed joke, seeing Sandra Sandoval live at a concert in Colon, and dancing tipico until the madrugada.
Did I miss anything? What do you think could be some ways to keep a couple going when living far apart?
