Preparing for Peace Corps in Panama

A few things that I am doing to prepare are reading books and articles about others experiences, speaking Spanish more with friends, and researching as much as I can about life in Panama! A funny thing is that I am reading this book again, Nine Hills to Nambonkaha , which is one woman's story about joining the Peace Corps. How ironic that I am doing the same thing six years later after reading this book a couple years ago. In fact, it was the required book for all first year freshman to read at my school, Winthrop University, and is one of my inspirations to become a Peace Corps Volunteer. I've listed below a few things that I am reading and doing to get ready. -Searching for updated packing lists (I found so many through search engines, though I plan to post one too once I finish packing!) -Reading shorts stories in Spanish ( Great Spanish & Latin American Short Stories of 20th Cent..  which is in Spanish and English to learn a few new words too!) -Studying Spanish...

Peace Corps Timeline

So for anyone interested to volunteer with the Peace Corps, how the process went for me is listed below! May 2013:  Completed and submitted my Peace Corps application (essays, fingerprints, and other application questions) June 2013:  Received an email to schedule an interview with a recruiter. July 2013:  Finished my interview and I am accepted! But, I have to wait four to six months for my official invitation and placement site. July 2013- November 2013:   Finished medical tasks to receive my invite to serve and my location. January 2014:  Received my placement and official invitation! I am scheduled to leave for Panama June 2014 as a Sustainable Agriculture Systems Extension Agent! I will be working with the locals to help them understand sustainable farming alternatives, quality control and marketing methods, develop market channels, and improve their diets to ensure they receive the proper nutrition.
